The St. Peter Cemetery is located in rural Hempstead County near the township of Ozan, Arkansas. The historic African American cemetery has gravesites containing the remains of former slaves with many graves identified throughout the century of the 1800s. The cemetery is located off county road 25 south directly west of the St. Peter CME Church.
During World War II areas located east of St. Peter CME Church became a part of the United States Army Proving Ground which lead to the forced relocation of many small communities that had family cemeteries located on their properties. Many of those family plots were relocated to the St. Peter cemetery.
In the early 1980s a tornado struck the cemetery uprooting trees and lead to the displacing of tombstones in the massive cleanup. The St. Peter Cemetery Association was organized with mass support from the community to undertake the cleanup effort. The St. Peter Cemetery Association continues to manage the affairs of the cemetery by meeting twice annually for business meetings and maintenance projects. Anyone may participate in association affairs. The cemetery has been maintained in a manner that gives a sense of dignity to all who rest there.
